About Nordic Walking

Nordic Walking is an enhancement of normal walking using specially designed poles.

Benefits of Nordic Walking

     Physical Benefits

  • Full-body workout: Nordic walking activates the arms, shoulders, chest ,core and legs simultaneously.
  • Improves posture and spinal alignment: The pole technique encourages upright posture and reduces slouching.
  • Boosts cardiovascular health: Elevates heart rate and improves aerobic capacity without high impact.
  • Strengthens muscles and bones: Especially beneficial for older adults and those with osteoporosis.
  • Reduces joint strain: Poles help distribute weight, easing pressure on knees, hips and ankles.

Nordic Walking Poles

Choosing the correct poles is very important. It is recommended you do not buy poles until you have
completed your Introductory Nordic Walking Training course and learned the technique of Nordic walking. The correct size and length of poles is very important. A lightweight, sturdy pole of the correct length with an ergonomic grip and a comfortable demiglove is ideal. Your instructor will have poles for sale or will be able to advise you on where they may be purchased.

What to wear

Clothing

“There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing” Alfred Wainwright, 1973 from his book ‘Coast to Coast’. The best advice is to wear layers of clothing, so you can adjust for changes in
temperature or weather as you warm up. A base layer, a fleece and an outer shell are ideal. Waterproof trousers and jacket are also a necessity.

Footwear

Correct footwear is essential. A good pair of waterproof runners or boots that support your ankles are a worthwhile investment.
