Since Nordic Walking can be done all year round it is important to consider the weather when preparing to go outdoors. So the motto “Dress for the weather” is particularly apt. One of our popular outdoor clothing manufacturersays “We believe there is no such thing as bad weather – just the wrong gear”.
Wear comfortable clothing. It is best to avoid very tight fitting clothes or indeed regular fashionable day wear like jeans. .It is best to choose your garments in a sports/outdoor clothing shop.
The best advice would be to wear layers of clothing – so you can adjust to changes of weather or temperature changes as you warm up with exercise.
The 3 Layer Concept:
Most clothing manufacturers who cater for outdoor sport or recreational activities recommend wearing 3 layers.
The Base Layer. This is the inner layer or foundation insulation garment worn against your skin to keep warm air in and let perspiration out.
Fleece.A breathable midlayer to keep your body regulated and
An Outer Shell. An outer layer to protect against wind and rain while letting perspiration out, so you stay warm and dry.
Caps and gloves are also necessary in the cold weather.
Footwear
Correct footwear is probably the single most important item to consider in order to ensure your walk comfortable and enjoyable.
We walk across grassland, nature trails and pathways in Phoenix Park throughout the year and the ground is usually wet or damp even when it is not raining. A pair of good waterproof runners or trainers is a worthwhile investment. It is also advisable to choose footwear that is specifically designed to support and cushion the foot as it rolls from heel to toe.
Some footwear companies provide runners or shoes that are specifically designed for Nordic Walking. These Nordic Walking runnersand Nordic Walking shoes come in waterproof and light Summer wear and although they are expensive would prove a worthwhile investment for anyone seriously interested in taking up Nordic Walking as a regular leisure or recreational activity.
