Nordic Walking Club

What we do

We meet and walk every Saturday morning throughout the year and every Tuesday evening during the Summer season.

Typical Walking session -  Saturday walks

Our members meet every Saturday morning throughout the year at the Papal Cross car park in Phoenix Park, Dublin.

We arrive for a 10.00am start.

 Warm – Up   Exercises

We start our morning with a 10 – 15 minute exercise warm –up routine, using the poles. This warm-up routine increases the blood flow to the muscles thus preventing muscle stiffness following exercise. It also lowers the risk of injury and improves overall performance.

We use the poles for our exercises because of the many advantages – especially the increased balance and stability, and greater range and variety of exercises allowing a full body workout.

Approx 90 minutes of Nordic Walking

Following our warm-up we then proceed with a walk that lasts approx 1 to 2 hours, depending upon members preferences on the day.

Our walk takes us on various trails around the beautiful grounds of Phoenix Park, giving plenty of variety in walking on grassland and pathways over both flat and hilly territory.

Members are divided into groups of between 6 and 15 people and walk at a pace that their level of fitness.

There are 3 levels of Nordic Walking.

1)      Health Improvement

2)      Fitness Development and

3)      Sports Conditioning..

Each of these Nordic walking levels has a specific range of movements that need to be learned and adopted. These techniques are progressive, rather than changing and participants could choose a  level that suit their health, fitness or specific goals.

.

Our walks are currently aimed at the Health Improvement Level, with an occasional venture into the Fitness Development range.

Cool Down and Stretching

We spend the last 10 to 15 minutes of our morning doing some cool down and stretching exercises, again using the poles.

Tuesday Evening Walks

Tuesday evening walks are held from Easter until the end of September. We meet at 7.30pm, again at the Papal Cross. But we cannot park in the car  park as the car park  gate

closes early. We therefore park in a nearby lay-by and walk to the Papal Cross.

Our Tuesday evening sessions follow the same format as the Saturday morning sessions.

Events outside Phoenix Park

During the summer months a number of events will be organised where the group will travel to interesting parts of the adjacent countryside and incorporate some scenic views, historic sites, and picnics. These will be arranged as Sunday outings and will be in addition to the usual walks.
